Approves Million Dollar Grant for Conservation in Argentina as well as Other Far-Reaching Environmental Grants
At its annual meeting on November 26, the Board of
Directors of the Mitsubishi Corporation Foundation for the Americas (MCFA), formerly the Mitsubishi International Corporation Foundation, approved nearly $700,000 in new grants, including a grant of $1,000,000, payable over four years, to the Wildlife Conservation Society; $300,000, payable over three years, to the Grupo Ecólogico Sierra Gorda in Querétaro, Mexico; $130,000, payable over three years, to the Wild Salmon Center; $20,000 to the People’s Environmental Center in New Orleans; and $6,000 to International Funders for Indigenous Peoples. The Mitsubishi International Corporation Foundation sponsored the Third International Seminar on Indigenous Women held on September 3, 4 and 5 in Bogota, Colombia. The three day seminar, organized by Colombia's Fundacion Natura together with Colombia’s National University and the United Nations, convened approximately 25 indigenous women from more than twelve countries in Latin America to discuss policies, programs and strategies about climate change control and mitigation - and particularly how climate change affects indigenous women, a voice that is rarely heard on the global stage. Mitsubishi Corporation, the parent company of Mitsubishi International Corporation, reported its third straight year of record profits.
Net profit rose 92% to $3.150 billion for the fiscal year ended March, 2006 and operating profit increased 91% to $3.148 billion.

MC Foundation for the Americas is partnering with National Environmental Education & Training Foundation (NEETF) to support this year's National Environmental Education Week (April 16-22), which is a full week of educational preparation for Earth Day in K- 12 classrooms, university campuses and informal settings, such as nature centers, parks, zoos, aquariums. The MC Foundation for the Americas has contributed a total of $85,000 to NEETF to launch a website, classroomearth.org, which provides a wealth of information about various environmental education programs for K-12 classrooms, after school, and home. To encourage environmental education, the MC Foundation for the Americas also hosts Environmental Breakfasts several times a year to provide a venue for environmental organizations and grantmakers to network and learn about current issues. |

Viapack Inc., a portfolio company of Mitsubishi International Corporation affiliate Red Diamond Capital, manufactures monolayer and co-extruded polyethlyene film. Recently, the company acquired Dalton, Georgia-based P&O Packaging, Ltd., which operates a 60,000 square foot facility and has grown
to become a leading producer of custom engineered co-extruded and monolayer
plastic films for industrial customers and packaging converters in the
Southeastern US. This acquisition increases Viapack's total annual
production capacity to more than 50 million pounds and provides Viapack with
a second production facility in a key growth market. Viapack is actively

Mitsubishi Corporation Fund for Europe and Africa Announces New Environmental Grants for 2006
Following the annual meeting of its trustees, the Mitsubishi Corporation Fund for Europe and Africa (MCFEA), a UK-registered charity, has announced its funding program for this year, supporting conservation, education and research relating to the environment, and poverty alleviation. The Fund will support several organizations, including WaterAid, The Society for Dolphin Conservation, Germany (GRD), Botanic Gardens Conservation International and the Earthwatch Institute, an organization supported by both Mitsubishi International Corporation and its parent Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan. The Fund's support of Earthwatch includes the ongoing participation of MC employees as volunteers on Earthwatch research projects. The Fund's support of GRD includes seed money for a research center in Croatia to prevent the extinction of dolphins in the Adriatic Sea. MC Life Science Ventures, Inc. Invests in Specialty Pharmaceutical Company NeurogesX, Inc.
In December 2005, MC Life Science Ventures (MCLSV) announced that it joined a $20 million private equity financing for San Carlos, California-based NeurogesX, Inc., which focuses on developing and commercializing novel treatments for relieving neuropathic pain. Proceeds from this financing will help complete NeurogesX's current clinical program in the U.S., as well as support its European marketing application for Transacin™, its proprietary dermal patch for treating neuropathic pain. The company's initial products are focused on the treatment of chronic pain in the areas of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), painful HIV-associated sensory neuropathy (HIV-AN) and painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN). It expects to file new drug applications with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for PHN and HIV-AN in mid-2007. Including this latest round of financing, NeurogesX has raised approximately $85 million since June 2000. MCLSV was created to consolidate the life sciences-related investments of Mitsubishi International Corporation and its parent Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan. |
